Solid fifth album
Jack Johnson delivers a solid fifth album with thirteen tracks that would satiate the appetite of any Jack Johnson fan. There are no surprises with To the Sea, though Johnson's brand of melodic summery acoustic guitar is suberb as it stands.
The opening track, You and Your Heart is energetic, as is At or With Me, tunes you could find yourself having a dance on the sand to. From The Clouds is a fun and fast end to the up-tempo end of Johnson's album. From My Little Girl, the pace slows and it's relaxing beach tunes that have you fighting the urge to get the lighter out and sway along.
Transporting you To The Sea, this album is perfect summer listening. A thoroughly enjoyable album.
Jack Johnson: To The Sea
'To The Sea' is Jack Johnson's fifth studio album in almost 10 years and continues to soothe hearts with his laid-back acoustic set. If you were a JJ fan before this album was released; don't worry, you still will be. However, this record won't be jumping out at any potential fans of Johnson. An album widely influenced from his upbringing on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii; 'To The Sea' is perfect for the background music for a barbeque on a balmy summers' night. 'You and Your Heart' is Johnson's debut single from the record and considering he doesn't have much to work with following the release; this was a fabulous choice. Tracks like 'At Or With Me' or 'The Upsetter' are a bit too heavy for a single you'll hear on the radio; 'When I Look Up' is a prelude of only 58 seconds (although a good arrangement); 'Turn Your Love' is very simple song and 'Anything But The truth' carries a depressing mood, both musically and lyrically. On a brighter note, title track 'To The Sea' is potentially Johnson's next single to hit the almost sunny shores of Australia as the tune is very catchy and uplifting. 'My Little Girl' will have all the guitarists up and about as there are some great riffs and solos throughout the song. 'Red Wine, Mistakes, Mythology' is another uplifting and funky track from the album which may encourage a few dance moves, while 'Only The Ocean' is possibly the unlucky tune that missed out on making the 'Surf's Up' soundtrack. Not taking away by any means from Johnson's amazing talent on the guitar, this album is definitely not his best, especially when comparing it to In Between Dreams (2005).
